Free sample files of Class E Earthworks and Class I Pipework are available by clicking the sample file icon at the bottom of the page. Class E Earthworks is prefaced by Labour, Plant and Material Resources sections.

The first item in Labour Resources is ELA Cuttings Gang. A build up of the labour involved is shown to produce an hourly gang rate of £41.95. The code ELA represents:

E = Class E Earthworks
L = Labour
A = The first of the labour gangs

In the next section, Plant Resources, EPD Filling Gang is shown at £31.02 per hour. The code of EPD represents:

E =  Class E Earthworks
P =  Plant
D = Because this gang is fourth in the list.

The Material Resources section shows an allowance for waste. In the Unit Rates section, the labour, plant and material resources come together to produce an item cost. The first column in the cost file is the item description. The next column in the cost file, Unit, states the unit of measurement as required by the method of measurement.

Plant Gang Hours represents the plant time required to carry out the work in the item description. This is expressed as parts of an hour. 0.50, therefore, is 30 minutes. Net Plant is the time stated in Plant Gang Hours multiplied by the relevant hourly rate in Plant Resources.

The next two columns in the cost file, Labour Gang Hours and Net Labour, operate in the same way as the previous plant columns. Net Materials shows the cost of the materials required, including an allowance for waste. The values of Net Plant, Net Labour and Net Materials are added together and the total shown under Net Total.

The cost under the Overheads and Profit column is a notional figure of 15% of the Net Total. The Total column is the sum of the Net Total, Overheads and Profit columns.
